For packing rings to be effective, their laps must be
positioned correctly. If they are not staggered, a flow path is created
which makes it easier for fluid to escape. |

Remove the packing rings. Inspect the stem and packing
chamber to make sure that escaping fluid has not created grooves or
scratches. Small scratches less than .005" can be polished using
an emery cloth. |

Install a new set of packing rings with their lap joints
staggered at 120 degrees so that the fourth packing ring has its lap
in the same position as the first packing ring. |
